Spruce up a tired bathroom

As long as its bathroom’s colours are neutral and the grout is clean and in good condition, it doesn’t take much to turn a hum drum bathroom into an attractive rental feature. A few tweaks will do it.

The first step is to ensure the bathroom is in good condition. Are there cracks in the tiles or grout? Is the caulking around the tub in good condition? Check for mildew and mould and get those problems remedied.

The faucet should be easy to use. Those with limited dexterity in their hands or wrists will appreciate a lever-style faucet as opposed to knobs that can be difficult to grip and turn.

Once the faucet has been chosen, there are other hardware options that can be used throughout the space. Consider the toilet paper holder and bathroom hooks in the same size. If the bathroom is well equipped with hooks and towel bars, residents will not have to install their own – making hole patching less of a chore when they leave.

Consider storage space. If there’s a bare corner, install shelving. Make sure there’s room for toothbrushes and soap on the vanity. If it’s a small vanity, install a shelf above it to shelve the essentials.

If the mirrors are plain and unframed, framing them will make a dramatic difference. Moen has come up with a kit with what they consider to be an error proof installation system for any sized mirror.

Don’t pull the shower curtain closed and miss an opportunity to make an impression. In a small bathroom, a dark, closed curtain can make the space feel small. Use a clear or light-coloured curtain and leave it open to display the clean tub and install a water-saving showerhead. There are many inexpensive and attractive options in showerheads and the water savings bring an added benefit.

It doesn’t take much to turn a boring bathroom into a renter’s oasis and the investment will pay for itself in water savings and rental appeal.
