Residents of a Toronto Community Housing building at 155 Sherbourne Street are the recent recipients of free access to the Web along with 30 laptop computers as part of a year-long pilot project.

The service was launched this past Saturday morning. The computers and wireless hotspot are being provided by the City of Toronto and Toronto Community Housing. Residents were joined by Councillor Minna-Wong (Ward 34 Don Valley East), who spearheaded the project.

The project is meant to assist in determining the feasibility of possible future City of Toronto efforts to provide free or low-cost Internet access to residents of the 13 Priority Neighbourhoods for Investment. The 13 Priority Neighbourhoods’ strategy was implemented in 2005 by the United Way of Toronto following the Strong Neighbourhood Task Force, a United Way-City of Toronto collaboration that looked into ways to strengthen the social infrastructure of neighbourhoods facing the greatest need across the city.

Toronto community housing is Canada’s largest social housing provider and home to more than 164,000 tenants with low and moderate incomes.
